Dear Friends of Ukraine,

The U.S. Congress returns after the Labor Day weekend following their August recess.  The next several weeks are a good opportunity to contact your Senators and Representatives to support the Holodomor resolutions.  Congress will recess once again in October to continue their campaigning for the November elections.  Please note it is important to register to vote and participate in the electoral process.

Information on the Holodomor resolutions and Voter Registration are provided below:

ACTION NEEDED:  Ukrainian Holodomor Resolutions

In March 2018, Sens. Rob Portman (R-OH) and Richard Durbin (D-IL), co-chairs of the Senate Ukraine Caucus, introduced S.Res.435, a resolution commemorating the 85th anniversary of the Ukrainian Famine-Genocide (Holodomor) of 1932-1933.

Similarly, in June 2018, Rep. Sander Levin (D-MI), and the co-chairs of the Congressional Ukrainian Caucus – Rep. Marcy Kaptur (D-OH), Andy Harris, MD (R-MD), and Brian Fitzpatrick (R-PA), introduced an analogous Holodomor resolution in the U.S. House of Representatives – H.Res.931.

The Holodomor resolutions are a very important issue for Ukraine and the Ukrainian American community. For decades, our community has been working arduously to bring awareness and achieve recognition of the Holodomor as a genocide of the Ukrainian nation.

As Congress will return in early September, the Ukrainian National Information Service (UNIS) appeals to the Ukrainian American community to contact your Senators and Representatives and urge them to co-sponsor S.Res.435/H.Res.931, respectively.  Many states have a large concentration of Ukrainian American constituents. Please contact your elected officials immediately and request their co-sponsorship of the Holodomor resolutions.

Attached, please find an updated UNIS Action Item with sample letters.  Contact information for your Senator may be obtained at: https://www.senate.gov/senators/contact or Representative at:  https://www.house.gov/representatives

Please widely circulate this information through your e-mail lists and on your social media pages: Facebook, Twitter, Instagram, etc.

VOTER REGISTRATION

Your vote is your voice as an American citizen. It is your opportunity to be heard on a variety of issues important to you. It is also your opportunity to hold elected officials accountable for their decisions: vote them back in if they are doing a good job and vote them out if they are not. Your vote also allows you to have a say in important issues that affect your community.

This year will be mid-term congressional elections, in addition to a multitude of state and local elections.  Now is the time to pay particular attention to what the candidates are saying about U.S. policy towards Ukraine.  Every vote counts on primary day, caucus day, and on Election Day!

Attached please find a Voter Registration flyer.  Please make efforts within your communities to have voter registration drives.

Your Vote Matters!
